Question

Sole the contradiction in the following statements. 1) For a given conductor current does not change with cross sectional area. Whereas, 2) We have the formula i=n.e.A.vd, wherein the charge e, drift velocity vd and 'n' i.e. electron density is constant for a material. This implies that 'i' is directly proportional to 'A' i.e. area of cross section. This contradicts with the first statement. Explain.

Solution

Dear student
As we know that current is the rate of flow of charge through a cross sectional area so if current through different cross sectional area is not same than it would lead to the accumulation ofcharge. In the given relation i=neAvd infact the drift velocity changes its value so that Avd remains constant through any area of cross section. So drift velocity is less where area of cross section is lessand vice versaRegards
