Question

Solid ammonium carbamate, NH4CO2NH2(s), dissociates into ammonia and carbon dioxide when it evaporates as shown by:
NH4CO2NH2(s)2NH3(g)+CO2(g)
At 25oC, the total pressure of the gases in equilibrium with the solid is 0.116 atm. If 0.1 mole of CO2 is introduced after equilibrium is reached then:

A
final pressure of CO2 will be less than 0.1 atm

Solution

The correct options are
C final pressure of CO2 will be more than 0.1 atm
D pressure of NH3 will decrease due to addition of CO2
The given reaction is:-
NH4CO2NH2(s)2NH3(g)+CO2(g)
Now, KP=(pNH3)2.pCO2pNH4CO3
NH4CO3 is pure solid. So,
KP=(pNH3)2.pCO2(I)
Now, If amount of CO2 is in creased at eqm then to keep KP, a constant the pressure of NH3 must decrease.
Also, since 0.1 moles of CO2 is introduced after the equilibrium is reached thus its pressure will be more than 0.1 atm.
