Question

Solids generally have higher density as compared to liquids, but ice floats on water. Why?

Solution

  • Though ice is a solid it has a large amount of space between its molecules these spaces are larger as compared to spaces in water molecules.
  • Density of ice is less than water because of the open porous structure of ice due to hydrogen bonding.

Hence, density of ice is less than that of water.
