given, $2 x^{2} - 8 x - 10 = 0$

$x^{2} - 4 x - 5 = 0$

$x^{2} - 5 x + x - 5 = 0$

$x (x - 5) + 1 (x - 5) = 0$

$(x - 5) (x + 1) = 0$

$x = 5, - 1$
