Question

Solve :
(a) Which of the following points lie at a distance of 2 units from the X axis: (1,1), (-1,-2), (2,2), (2,0), (-2,3)
(b) Find a point on 2x + 3y = 10 which is at a distance of 2 units to the right of the Y axis. [3 MARKS]

Solution

Sub-part (a) : 1 Mark
Sub-part (b) : 2 Marks

(a) Since the point is at a distance of 2 units from the X axis, its ordinate should have a magnitude of 2. That is, the ordinate should be +2 or -2.

From the points that have been given, (-1, -2) and (2, 2) both have ordinate equal to +2 or -2.

(b) Let the required point be (a, 2)

Since it is on the line, it is a solution of the equation 2x + 3y = 10

Thus, 2a + (3x2) = 10

2a = 4

a = 2

Hence, the required point is (2, 2)
