$\frac{x^{2} + 8}{x^{2} + 20} = \frac{1}{2}$

$\Rightarrow 2 (x^{2} + 8) = x^{2} + 20$

$\Rightarrow 2 x^{2} + 16 - x^{2} - 20 = 0$

$\Rightarrow x^{2} - 4 = 0$

$\Rightarrow (x + 2) (x - 2) = 0$

$∴ x = {- 2, 2}$
