$\frac{x - 8}{5} = \frac{x - 12}{9}$
$\Rightarrow \frac{(x - 8)}{5} \times \frac{9}{9} = \frac{(x - 12)}{9} \times \frac{5}{5}$
$\Rightarrow 9 x - 72 = 5 x - 60$
$\Rightarrow (9 x - 5 x) = - 60 + 72$
$\Rightarrow 4 x = 12$
$\Rightarrow x = 3$
