Solution

$p^{2} + 6 p - 16$
$= p^{2} + 6 p + 3^{2} - 3^{2} - 16$
$= p^{2} + 6 p + 9 - 25$
$= (p + 3)^{2} - (5)^{2}$
$= (p + 3 - 5) (p + 3 + 5)$
$= (p - 2) (p + 8)$
$∴ p^{2} + 6 p - 16 = (p - 2) (p + 8)$
