$3 x + 2 = x - 8 \Rightarrow 3 x - x = - 8 - 2 \Rightarrow 2 x = - 10 \Rightarrow x = - \frac{10}{2} = - 5$

(i) on the number line

(ii) x = - 5 is a line parallel to y-axis at a distance of 5 units to the left of y-axis.
