Question

Solve the following

(1) If the weight of a body on the surface of the moon is 100N, what is its mass? (61.34 kg)

(2) If the acceleration due to gravity one the surface of the earth is 9.8 ms2 what will be the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of a planet whose mass and radius both are two times the corresponding quantities for the earth? (4.9 m/s2).

Solution

(1) Weight of the body, W = 100 N

Acceleration due to gravity of the moon, g’ = g/6 = 9.81/6 = 1.63 m/s2

Mass of the body, m = ?

W = mg’

⇒ m= W/g’

⇒ m = 100/1.63 = 61.35 kg

Therefore, mass of the body is 61.35 kg.

(2) Acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the earth (g) is equal to 9.8 m/s2.

Let acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the planet be ‘g’.

Acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the planet is given by,
