Solve the following equation:
$\sqrt{x^{2} + 8} = 2 x + 1$

Solution

$\sqrt{x^{2} + 8} = 2 x + 1$
squaring both sides
$x^{2} + 8 = 4 x^{2} + 4 x + 1$
$3 x^{2} + 4 x - 7 = 0$
$3 x^{2} + 7 x - 3 x - 7 = 0$
$(x - 1) (3 x + 7) = 0$
$∴ x = 11 o r \frac{- 7}{3}$
