Question

Solve the following equations by the substitution method :

(x)(3x-y)5=2y-13x8-y4=12

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Express one variable (say x) in terms of the other variable (say y) from one of the given equations:

3x-y5=2y-1

Multiplying the equation throughout by 5

3x-y=5(2y-1)3x-y=10y-53x=10y+y-53x=11y-5x=11y-53

Step 2: Substitute this value of x in the other equations to get a linear equation in y which can be solved:

3x8-y4=12

Multiplying the equation throughout by 8:

3x-2y=4311y-53-2y=411y-5-2y=49y-5=49y=4+59y=9y=99y=1

Step 3: Substitute the values of y obtained in x=11y-53, to get the values of x:

x=11y-53x=(11×1)-53x=11-53x=63x=2

Hence, the value of x=2andy=1.
