The correct option is D $x = 5, y = 6$
$7 x + 6 y = 71; y = \frac{71 - 7 x}{6};$
Substituting:
$5 x - 8 (\frac{71 - 7 x}{6}) = - 23$
$\Rightarrow 30 x - 568 + 56 x = - 138$
$\Rightarrow 86 x = 430$
$\Rightarrow x = 5$
Resubstituting the value of $x$ , we get
$y = \frac{71 - 35}{6} = 6$
Therefore
$x = 5, y = 6$
