cross multiplication method
$x + 2 y = 2$
$x - 3 y = 7$

Solution

$x + 2 y = 2 \Rightarrow x = 2 - 2 y$ _ (1)
$x - 3 y = 7 \Rightarrow x = 7 + 3 y$ _ (2)
diving (1) & (2)
$\frac{x}{x} = \frac{2 - 2 y}{7 + 3 y} \Rightarrow 7 + 3 y = 2 - 2 y$
$\Rightarrow 5 y = - 5 \Rightarrow y = - 1$
$x = 2 - 2 (- 1) = 4$
$∴ x = 4, y = - 1$
