Question

Solve the following pair of linear equations by elimination method:

( 3 marks)

3x+2y=6

2x- 3y=17

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: At first we eliminate the variable x from both the equations

(1)×2⇒6x+4y=12 ----------------------------- (3)

(2)×3⇒6x-9y=51 -----------------------------(4) ( 1 mark)

Step 2:

Now, (3)- (4) ⇒(6x+4y)-(6x-9y)=12-51

⇒6x-6x+4y+9y=-39

⇒13y=-39

⇒y=(-39)/13

⇒y=-3 ( 1 mark)

Step 3 :

From (1), we get,

3x+2(-3)=6

⇒3x=6+6=12

⇒x=12/3=4

∴The solutions are x=4, y=-3 ( 1 mark)
