Solution

Let the monthly salary of the man be Rs x.
Let the annual increment be Rs y.
According to the question, we have:
x + 2y = 11000 ...(1)
and
x + 4y = 14000 ...(2)
Subtracting (1) from (2), we get:
x + 4y = 14000
x + 2y = 11000
- - -
-------------------
2y = 3000
⇒ y = 1500
Substituting the value of y in equation (1), we get:
x + 2(1500) = 11000
⇒ x + 3000 = 11000
⇒ x = 8000

∴ Starting salary = Rs 8000; annual increment = Rs 1500
