Solve the following quadratic equation and give your answer correct to 3 significant figures:
5x23x4=0.

We know that the roots of a quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0 can be calculated using quadratic formula,
x=b±b24ac2a

On comparing the given equation with standard form, we get a=5,b=3, and c=4.

On substituting the values in the formula, we get:
x=3±(3)24×5×(4)2×5

=3±9+8010

=3±9.43310

either x=3+9.43310 or x=39.43310x=12.43310 or x=6.43310x=1.243 or x=0.643



Hence, the roots of the given equation correct to 3 significant figures are x=1.243 or 0.643.
