Question

Solve the following simultaneous equations:
1x+1y=8;
4x2y=2

Open in App
Solution

Given, 1x+1y=8
4x2y=2
Substituting 1x=a and 1y=b
a+b=8..........(1)
4a2b=2.......(2)

Multiplying equations (1) by 2, we get

2a+2b=16........(3)

Adding equation (3) and equation (2), we get

2a+2b=16
4a2b=2
6a=18
a=186
=3

Substituting a=3 in equation (1)
a+b=8
3+b=8
b=83
=5
Resubstituting
1x=a, 1y=b
1x=3, 1y=5
1=3x,1=5y
x=13, y=15
