Question

Solve the following system of equations by substitution method:

2x+3y=11
2x−4y=−24

Open in App
Solution

Given: Two linear equations in two variables.

2x+3y=11 (1)
2x−4y=−24 (2)

Using eq.(1) we get,
2x=11−3y
x=(11−3y)/2 (3)

Substitute this value of x in (2) we get,

2×[(11−3y)/2]−4y=−24
11 - 3y - 4y = -24
11+24=7y

y=35/7=5

Putting this value of y in (3) we get,

x=(11−3(5))/2=−4/2
x=−2

Hence, (x,y)=(−2,5)
