Solve the following system of equations using the cross multiplication method.

ax+by=a-bbx-ay=a+b

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:Analysing the given equations

The given system of equations may be written as

ax+by-(a-b)=0bx-ay-(a+b)=0

The given system of equation is of the forms

a1x+b1y+c1=0a2x+b2y+c2=0

Step 2: using cross multiplication method

where, a1=a,b1=b,c1=-(a-b)a2=b,b2=-a,c2=-(a+b)

Substitute the given values in the general form of equation, we get

x=b1c2-b2c1a1b2-a2b1,y=c1a2-c2a1a1b2-a2b1x=bx-(a+b)-(-a)x-(a-b)ax-a-bxb=-ab-b2-a2+ab-a2-b2=-a2-b2-a2-b2=1y=-(a-b)xb-(-(a+b))xaax-a-bxb=-ab+b2+a2+ab-a2-b2=a2+b2-(a2+b2)=-1

Hence x=1 & y=-1 is the required solution
