For, $| x + y | = 1$ , graph is as follows with blue color and for $| x | + | y | = 1$ , graph is with red color, So, from graphical method we can conclude about the solution of equation as,
$x + y = - 1$ when $- 1 \leq x \leq 0$
and $x + y = 1$ when $0 \leq x \leq 1$
