We know that the quadratic formula is x=b±b24ac2a
, therefore, substitute a=1,b=2 and c=4 in x=b±b24ac2a as follows:

x=b±b24ac2a=(2)±(2)2(4×1×4)2×1
=2±4162
=2±122

=2±4×32
=2±232
=2(1±3i)2=(1±3i)
Hence, x=1+3i or x=13i.
