According to question,

$(x - 1)^{2} + 1 = 17$

=> $(x - 1)^{2} = 16$

=> $(x - 1)^{2} = 4^{2}$

=> $x - 1 = 4$ & $x - 1 = - 4$

=> $x = 5$ & $x = - 3$
