Solve this :

If n1, n2 and n3 denote the number of unpaired electrons in Fe2+, Mn2+ and V4+ respectively, then which one of the following is correct relation between n1, n2 and n3?n1=n2>n3 n1>n2>n3n1=n2=n3n2>n1>n3

Solution

Dear Student,

As the valence electronic configuration for the ions are as follows:

Fe - [Ar] 3d6,4s2Fe2+- [Ar] 3d6, 4s0Mn - [Ar] 3d5, 4s2Mn2+ - [Ar] 3d5, 4s0V - [Ar] 3d3, 4s2V4+ - [Ar] 3d1, 4s0

So the unpaired electrons are as follows:
Fe2+ has 4 unpaired electrons
Mn2+ has 5 unpaired electrons
V4+ has 1 unpaired electrons

So, n2>n1>n3

Regards.
