$2 x - 3 y = 7$ ---------------- $(1)$
$5 x + y = 9$
$y = 9 - 5 x$ ------------- $(2)$
Now $,$ substitute equation $(2)$ in equation $(1)$
Then $, 2 x - 3 (9 - 5 x) = 7$
$2 x - 27 + 15 x = 7$
$17 x = 27 + 7$
$17 x = 34$
$x = 34 / 17 = 2$
$y = 9 - 5 \times 2 = 9 - 10 = - 1$
Therefore $x$ is $2$ and y is $- 1$
