We have,
$x^{2} + 5 x - 7 = 0$

Since,
$x = \frac{- b \pm \sqrt{b^{2} - 4 a c}}{2 a}$

Therefore,
$x = \frac{- 5 \pm \sqrt{5^{2} - 4 \times 1 \times - 7}}{2 \times 1}$
$x = \frac{- 5 \pm \sqrt{25 + 28}}{2}$
$x = \frac{- 5 \pm \sqrt{53}}{2}$
