By the method of substitution,
$x + y = 3 \Rightarrow x = 3 - y$
$2 x + 5 y = 12 \Rightarrow 2 (3 - y) + 5 y = 12$
$\Rightarrow 6 - 2 y + 5 y = 12$
$\Rightarrow 3 y = 12 - 6 = 6$
$∴ y = \frac{6}{3} = 2$
And $x = 3 - y = 3 - 2 = 1$
$∴ x = 1, y = 2$
