We have,
(a) $\frac{x + 1}{2} = \frac{5 - x}{3}$
$\Rightarrow 3 x + 3 = 10 - 2 x \Rightarrow x = 7 / 5$

(b) $\frac{21 - 5 x}{3} = \frac{17 - 15 x}{6}$
$\Rightarrow 42 - 10 x = 17 - 15 x$
$\Rightarrow x = - 5$

Hence, this is the answer.
