Laminaria belongs to phaeophyceae (brown algae). In phaeophyceae, food is stored as complex carbohydrates, which may be in the form of laminarin or mannitol. The vegetative cells have a cellulosic wall usually covered on the outside by a gelatinous coating of algin or alginic acid. In some large brown algae, certain cells are modified into long filaments called as trumpet hyphae. Laminaria exhibits a heteromorphic alternation of generations. Laminaria shows haplo-diplontic life cycle in which both halpoid and diploid phases exhibit in an intermediate condition. They vary in color from olive green to various shades of brown depending upon the amount of the xanthophyll and fucoxanthin present in them.
Zygotic meiosis and two anterior flagella are characteristics of Chlamydomonas which is a green algae.
