The techniques of genetic engineering used to create exact multiple copies of a desired gene is called gene cloning or DNA cloning.

It is done by identifying the desired gene in the DNA followed by digestion with suitable restriction enzymes (DNA cutting enzymes). This yields DNA fragments with the gene of interest. It is then introduced into a host. The host with foreign DNA inserts is selected. These are further grown and allowed to transfer the desired DNA to the progeny by repeated multiplication.
