Question

Some square planar complexes of Ni(II) are diamagnetic while some others are paramagnetic. Justify.

Solution

The paramagnetic behavior of complex is due to the presence of unpaired electrons and the diamagnetic behavior of complex is due to the presence of paired electrons.
As in case of complex (NiCl4)2 Cl is a weak field ligand which doesn't take part in a pairing of electrons so nickel has 2 electrons so it becomes paramagnetic.
As in case of (NiCN4)2 CN is strong field ligand which takes part in the pairing of electrons thus two electrons of nickel are paired up so that it behaves as diamagnetic in nature.
Conclusions: square planar complex of Ni(II) are diamagnetic and some are paramagnetic.
