Solution

Let the total number of students be x.

Number of students attended the picnic =x5

[Since, five students are not attended]

Let cost of food for each member be y.
xy=500 ...(i)

After decreasing five members, cost of food for each member increased by Rs.5
(x5)(y+5)=500

xy+5x5y25=500

500+5x5y25=200 [xy=500]

5x5y=500500+25

5x5y=25

xy=5 or y=x5
Puting in equation (i)
x(x5)=500
x25x500=0

x225x+20x500=0

x(x25)+20(x25)=0

(x25)(x+20)=0
x=25,x=20

Since, the number of persons is positive.

So, the total number of students =25
Number of students attended the picnic =255=20
