On opening the cork, a characteristic smell of substance Y is obtained and a gas Z is also observed to be formed. The gas Z extinguishes a burning matchstick.​ ​

Anaerobic respiration is exhibited by X (yeast) in the above process.​ In this process, the glucose is incompletely oxidised into ethanol and carbon dioxide in the absence of oxygen. A small amount of energy is also released here. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​
