When we do heavy exercise, sufficient oxygen is not present in the muscle cells for oxidation, so the muscle cells undergo anaerobic respiration giving out lactic acid as a by-product. Accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles cause muscular cramps. On further availability of oxygen, this lactic acid is broken down.
