Solution

Step-1: Form equations using given data:

Given that,

  • Sonali has 67 coins in his collection
  • Quarters are three more than nickels
  • Nickels are seven fewer than dimes

Let the number of quarters be x, number of nickels be y and the number of dimes be z.

Then according to question, x+y+z=67 ...i

And, x=y+3 ...ii

And y+7=z ...iii

Step-2: Solve for the number of quarters, nickels and dimes:

On substituting ii and iii in i, we get;

y+3+y+y+7=67

3y+10=67

3y=57

y=19

Substitute y=19 in ii and iii, we get;

x=19+3

x=22

And, 19+7=z

26=z

Hence, the number of quarters, nickels and dimes are 22,19 and 26, respectively.
