Question

Soni says that the acceleration in an object could be zero even when several forces are acting on it. Do you agree with her? Why?

Solution

  1. Force is defined as the product of mass and acceleration i.e., F=ma.
  2. Force is a vector quantity as it has both magnitude and direction.
  3. When one force is acting on a body, and another one with equal magnitude is also acting on the body but in the opposite direction, net force on the body will be nil.
  4. When the net force on the body is nil, there will be no acceleration in the body.
  5. This can be extrapolated into a situation where many forces are acting on the body but if the net force on the body is zero, the acceleration will also be zero.

Therefore, Soni is correct.
