Even months after independence, Hyderabad refused to join the Indian Union. The Razaks were still ruled under Nizam until the Indian Government decided to step in. Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the union home minister at the time entered Hyderabad with Indian Army Units on September 17,1948 and then the Nizam had to surrender. Immediately the state was merged into the Indian Union.
