The Pandya territory was recovered by Kadungon from the Kalabhras at the end of 6th century CE. Arikesari Maravarman ascended the throne in 642 CE. He is also infamous for persecuting Jains and can be identified as Kun Pandian. The next great king was Jatila Parantaka Nedunjadayan or Varaguna I. He was the donor of the famous Velvikuddi plates. The next successors Srimara Srivallabha and Varaguna II were unable to face the rising Chola dynasty under Parantaka I. The Pandyan rule revived by Kadungon ended in 920 CE when Rajasimha II was defeated by Chola king Parantaka I.
