When a food particle comes closer to an amoeba, it sends out cytoplasmic projections called pseudopodia. Pseudopodia creates a wave which brings the food particle closer to the surface. The pseudopodia then join thereby, trapping the particle within it. This results in a structure called phagosome, which is similar to a food vacuole. The contents of phagosome are digested and the wastes are sent out by a process called exocytosis.
