Question

Sound waves travel from air to water. The velocity of the sound waves in air is 332ms1 and wavelength is 2 m. If the wavelength of the sound waves is 850 cm, find its velocity in water.

Open in App
Solution

The velocity of sound = wavelength × frequency
So, v=λf
The frequency of sound waves in air, f=vλ=3322=166Hz
The frequency does not depend on medium.
Thus, velocity in water v=λw×f=(850)(166)=141100cm/s=1411m/s
