Solution

The correct option is C 0.998 m
Given:
Span length of bridge,L=2.4 km=2400 m
Sag length of cable along the span at 30 C, ΔL=0.5 km=500 m
Co-efficient of linear expansion of cable, α=12×106/ C
To find: Change in length of cable when the temperature changes from 10 C to 42 C, (ΔL)=?

From figure,
Cable length at 30 C, L=LPRQ=212002+5002=2600 m
Also, L=L0(1+αΔT)
[Due to linear expansion]
2600=L0(1+12×106×(3010))
[ Lo is cable length at 10 C ]
L0=2599.376 m
Now, change in length of the cable due to change in temperature from 10 C to 42 C
ΔL=L0αΔT
=2599.376×12×106×(4210)=0.998 m
