Question

primary or aliphatic amine is a stronger base than Ammonia .explain

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Aliphatic amines are stronger bases than ammonia because alkyl groups are electron releasing groups. As the number of electron releasing group increases,
means as the size of alkyl group increases, stability due to +I effect predominates over the stability due to hydrogen bonding and hence tertiary amines are more basic than primary amines. Basicity increases because alkyl shows +I effect which donates electrons and electron donating tendency is characteristic property of base.

Basicity order: Tertiary amines > secondary amines > primary amines > ammonia
