Question

Why do all traits or characteristics in asexual reproduction come from a single parent? Does this give them a survival advantage? How?

Solution

Dear student,

Asexual reproduction itself means that the offspring is formed without the fusion of the gametes and only one parent gives rise to the offspring.
This, causes the passage of the characteristics of only one parent, since genes of only one parent is transferred. Thus, there is no variation generated and hence this does not favour the natural selection. Natural selection is better for an organism that has variations and the chances of variation is minimum in an offspring formed by asexual reproduction.
