Question

Why does equilibrium constant remain unchanged even on adding a catalyst?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Equilibrium constants does not change even on adding a catalyst. A catalyst accelerate both the forward reaction and the backward reactions equally hence a dynamic equilibrium is established between them when the rates of the forward and the backward reactions occur simultaneously equal. From this we can conclude, that when a catalyst speeds up both the reactions at a same amount or extent, then they will remain equal without any change in the position of equilibrium.
An equilibrium constant can only be changed in case of change of temperature.
