Question

PL explain why?

5. The decreasing order of basic strength in
C6H5NH2, (C6H5)2NH, CH3NH2, NH3 is

(a) IV>II>II>I (b) II>II>III>IV
(c) III>IV>I>II (d) II>I>III>IV

Solution

Dear student
 Order of basicity: CH3-NH2 > NH2 > Ph-NH2 > (Ph)2NH

Basic strength is the ability to donate the lone pair. Due to Inductive effect by CH3 electron density on N increases thus lone pair donating tendency increases. When benzene ring is attached to the nitrogen the lone pair of N take part in resonance and is not available the donation, thus low basic strength. In 2 phenyl groups, more resonance is there and hence even lower Basic strength.
