Q5. The electronic configuration of gadolinium (Atomic number 64) is:

(a) [Xe] 4 ƒ3 5d5 6s2 (b) [Xe] 4 ƒ7 5d2 6s1

(c) [Xe] 4 ƒ7 5d1 6s2 (d) [Xe] 4ƒ8 5d6 6s2

Solution

Dear Student,

Electronic configuration of Gd = [Xe] 4f 7 5d1 6s2

In Gd, one electron instead goes to 5d instead of 4f. This is because 4f and 5d orbital in Gd is about the same energy level and Gd atom has a tendency to retain the configuration with a half-filled 4f level which is more stable.
