5. The temperature at 12 noon was 10o C above zero. If it decrease at the rate of 2oC per hour until midnight, at what time would the temperature be 8oC below zero? What would be the temperature at mid-night ?

1. Let the time be x 10-(-8)=x×(-2), --[-2 because it is decreasing 2°C everyhour]18 = x×-2-182=x-9=xneglecting -ve sign as time can't be -veHence, at 9:00 pm the temperature will be-8°C.2. Let the temperature be x 10+12×(-2)=x10+(-24)=x-14=xTherefore the temperature on mid-night will be -14°C.
