Solution

The correct option is A

N: Tetrahedral, ; B: Tetrahedral,

We have already seen the shapes and geometries of both BF3 and NH3. Let us look at them once again:

(For B)ep = V+L+AC2 = 3+32 = 3 Trigonal Planer (No lone pairs)

For N ep = V+L+AC2 = 5+32 Tetrahedral(with one lone pair)

BF3

Three sp2 hybrid orbitals which will overlap with Flourine

Four sp3 hybrid orbitals which will overlap with Hydrogen

Therefore , BF3 Trigonal Planar , sp2

NH3 Tetrahedral,sp3

Now, Let us try and use the VSEPR theory to calculate the shape and geometry of the 1:1 complex of BF3 and NH3. Once the lone pair on N atom in NH3 forms a coordinate covalent bond with the BF3 molecule, there is a positive charge on the N atom and a negative charge on the B atom.

(For B)ep = V+L+AC2 = 3+4+102 = 4 Tetrahedral

For N ep = V+L+AC2 = 5+4+012 Tetrahedral
