The primary transcript or hnRNA (heterogeneous nuclear RNA) formed after transcription contains sequences that code for amino acids (exons) as well as sequences which do not code for amino acids (introns). The introns are removed from the primary transcript and the exons are linked together to form a mature mRNA. This process is called splicing.
The snRNPs (small nuclear ribonucleoproteins) and other proteins together form the spliceosome, which is responsible for splicing of hnRNA. It is however the snRNAs that specifically help the spliceosomes identify the actual areas to be spliced on hnRNA.
