Summer monsoon:
Known as south-west monsoons, they bring rain to India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Burma. This is brought by cooler, denser and high-pressure winds over the Indian Ocean, to the low-pressure area over the landmass developed due to the heating of the land of during summer and the air above it becoming lighter and moving up. Hence, they are called summer monsoons or south-west monsoons.
Winter monsoon:
During winter, South and East Asia are cold regions and hence the air above the land surface is denser and colder as compared to the air above the oceans which is warm and lighter. So the wind blows from the land mass to the oceans and thus it brings rains, but in lesser quantities. They are also sometimes called receding monsoons.
